Ranking of Waste Investments 2019 – Focus on Waste-to-Energy

Little risk – little reward.

Big risk – big reward.

1. TOP INVESTMENT OPPORTUNITY: WASTE-TO-ENERGY

The best investment opportunity that I foresee in the waste industry comes in the form of waste-to-energy businesses, especially in countries experiencing strong growth trajectories such as is the case in East Asia.

2. THERE IS A STRONG NEED FOR WASTE-TO-ENERGY INSTALLATIONS IN ASIA

East Asia is growing fast and knows no bounds. More economic growth leads to more municipal solid waste and commercial waste that is being generated which requires smarter disposal solutions. Also, local inhabitants often blatantly refuse to have landfill sites right near their property, particularily in places where space is limited such as Indonesia for example.

3. ENVIRONMENTAL LEGISLATION IS OFTEN NOT AS STRINGENT AS IN THE EUROPEAN UNION

Although environmental standards are generally very strict wherever you are, there is a tendency for environmental legislation to be more lenient in East Asia. This is very advantagous, particularily if one wishes to quickly build up capacity to dispose of waste material and produce energy on the side.

4. EAST ASIA AND SOUTHEAST ASIA’S PRIVATE SECTOR INVESTS MASSIVELY IN RENEWABLE ENERGY SOURCES

There has been much talk of investments by governments in the renewable energy field in East Asia, but actually govenments have a strong desire to see there is an investment push into renewable energy production by the private sector in order to make the domestic suppliers of renewable energy infrastructure competitive internationally. One option to benefit from that is for investors to find companies that already have a foothold in East Asia in the waste-to-energy field such as SUEZ and VEOLIA who are major players in the waste-to-energy industry in Europe and increasingly North America as well.
